My HOA states very clearly that :

"No poultry shall be kept on any of the lots." I will try to find more info tonight but at the moment I can't seem to find the actual ordinances or my HOA's website...

The HOA called poultry : "Domesticated birds used for meat, eggs, or feathers." I however, don't want chickens for that... I want them because I see them as the perfect pet. Is this an okay loophole? Or should I claim that bantams aren't poultry and go for 3 of those...?

Secondly, the HOA denied my petition and speaking in front of the board last year because they thought that chickens would lower home value, cause smell and visual disturbance, and attract predators. What kind of grounds does that hold? I am not sure of the home value, but the hens I kept were very beautiful, decorative birds in a visually pleasing coop, I cleaned up the coop weekly, and it had little to no smell. In the 8 months of the year I had them, not once did a predator come even near the hens, and they were in a coop that was very predator prone. I personally think the HOA is full of it

Sorry, but you're just asking for problems if you get chickens. You're not going to find a loophole or argument that will hold up. I hate HOA's and would never live anywhere that has one for exactly this kind of reason. I wish you luck but your best shot at having chickens now is to move.

Whether or not that is why YOU want them, that is what MOST people use poultry for. Your argument for a loophole simply will not fly.

As for speaking to the board, that is almost certainly the RIGHT of every HOA member. Check your state laws.

FWIW, in my HOA poultry have always been allowed, and at one point not too long ago, all but one or two of the board members had or had had chickens and other livestock. Our home values are more than 2.5 times the median value for our city, and have risen about 7% in the last year.

One person is not going to change set minds. You need to get a group of your fellow HOA members behind your efforts. If a large enough percentage of the residents want it to happen, you can make it happen.

Quote: So get some cute waterfowl instead. The eggs taste good. The rule says poultry. Nothing about waterfowl. Ask around about a quiet breed of waterfowl. It also says "domesticated". How about finding a small breed of poultry which is not "domesticated"? And not noisy. Maybe quail or pheasant? They didn't say you couldn't have birds. They just don't want certain "kinds" of poultry. Try " North River Exotics " website for some stunning fowl. http://www.northriverexoticbirds.com/
Best,
Karen
