Horizontal nipple waterer

When I started using them I just sat out there for awhile and would hit the nipple anytime a chicken came close to it so they could see the water coming out. Usually once they saw it drip they would come investigate on their own by hitting it. Once one or two were pecking and drinking the rest followed suit. I have even used them in small plastic water bottles for chicks.

I hope you like that ....my 5 gallon waterer get mouldy before it’s done . Really watch and smell that amount of water, unless you have 254 birds
I have a five gallon waterer too and even with apple cider vinegar it gets pretty moldy in the summer. I also have to clean it at least once a week. It stays much cleaner in the fall and winter

I'm terrible. When I started using my horizontal poultry nipple waterers I just took my favorite chicken at the moment and put her beak in the nipple until water came out-but any bold chicken will due. It's like dipping little chicks. I think I may have done two chickens total. Then they teach each other.

I made up a 5 gallon bucket with the horizontal waterers. I took out the other waterers and tapped the nipples leaving water droplets. Less than 2 min all my 6 birds were drinking from the new set up. I did this first thing in the morning when they first walked out of the coop.
On these hot days I still supply water in the coop and an open omlet aterer from Eglu. Some birds hit the horizontal waterers first thing some hit the open water. They all drink from all 3 sources.

Thank you for that , the other guy made it sound like we were dirty people with mold in the waterers!! The reality is in the heat water goes bad.. just because you don’t take the time to smell it or see the green doesn’t mean it’s fresh water! Change it out once a week , birds are sensitive

What kind of waterer are you using that gets moldy and is it out in the sun?
I have 2 horizontal nipple waterers(plastic buckets) that I just add water to. I might rinse them out once a month but usually there is no need to, so I don't.

Once a month ? Now that’s not fresh water , not my idea of caring for birds... to each their own but don’t make it sound unusual that my waterer gets moldy , changing and cleaning it once a week is a normal way to ensure fresh waster.

I haven't had any mold issues yet, I am keeping my eye on it though thanks for the heads up
