Horizontal Nipples vs. Vertical Nipples

If you buy those cooler extension things, let us know how they work out.
I'm intrigued by their products..
Especially as they seem to be making(having them made) their own nipples.
Am tempted to buy some myself just so I can touch and test them.

Will do!

Yeah, I went ahead and ordered them, both extensions and nipples...
...hope that takes care of my compulsivity for the day

:lau Well let me know how it works! I wont be able to order some until next week when I get back home. I sure hope they work well!

Not sure how long they'll take to get here, 'free' shipping can be a long lead time.
And not sure I have a cooler to test on, tho I might-will have to dig around.
@blackdog043 have you used these products?

I hear ya... I was reading that you need to make sure of the thickness of your cooler because some are really thick and the adapters are only 1.5" long.

I think that could cover most coolers,
but might be hard to measure wall thickness before drilling that hole.

Another thing to keep in mind is how big of a cooler do you need, for both water capacity and heater fitting in functionally.
My birds drink about a gallon a day, I have a 3 gallon jug that I top off every day, especially in winter as you need to keep an AQ heater covered with water at all times or it could start a fire. Not sure about other heaters, like the stock tank ones.
The 3 gallon I have works well as the AQ heater fits laying flat on the bottom,
and also fit thru the rather large neck,
so what heater you use is also a variable to consider.

I only have 7 chickens, and my cockerel is going to go live at my dad's hobby farm. So I will have 6 chickens to make this waterer for by then. I have my younger ( 3 month olds) separated from my older hens as I am slowly trying to integrate them. They are in the same run, but have a wall that is just made of chicken wire separating them. I am thinking of keeping them separated until I can get 1 large coop built. So, with that, I am thinking of maybe 2 one gallon coolers? What do you suggest?

I would think you'd have them integrated by winter.

Another thought for you, if you daytime temps stay above freezing,
you could make 2 waterers and swap them out every morning and skip the heater altogether.

True!

How many gallons of water for 6 birds, do you think?

I keep 15-20 over winter and they drink less than a gallon a day.
I have 32 now, 13 adults, 4 @ 12wo, and 15 @ 7wos and they go thru about a gallon.
