horizontal water nipples

I use those nipples to and my girls are fine with it however, when they are in the brooder I train them using a small gerbil waterer when they are 2to3 weeks old then switch to a bigger gerbil waterer for the last 3weeks before putting outside. I have done several this way with no issues.their beaks at that old might not be able to trigger it. You could try tapping it real fast so it makes the ticking noise then put there beaks up to it so they get water on them. But really, they might be to young to trigger them. The nipples themselves are great, my 5gallon bucket has a lid on it so no flies,poo or dust just good clean water for them. You also don't have to worry about it tipping over and spilling. the 5 gal. bucket was sitting on the floor of the brooder and the nipples were mounted about 3- 4 inches from the bottom. i could try it without as much water in the bucket.

Head pressure doesn't really work this way. 100 gallons ten feet from the ground produces the same pressure as 1 gallon ten feet from the ground.

I had trouble with those exact nipples. Not enough water coming out of them and the triggers seemed a bit "sticky" to me. Like it was hard to press them in. So I unscrewed them and put in vertical nipples for my 8 wk old orps.

The vertical nipples can leak but I'm putting some plumbers tape on the threads to keep them from leaking as much.

The bigger problem is that they leak out the ball cock or nipple or whatever you want to call it 2-3 drips every time a bird drinks. Gerbil waterers do this too typically, but higher quality ones do it much less.

Dc3085 is right,don't buy the ones at Walmart and such. Been there done that!they will eventually make a mess. I bought mine at a pet store. They were a couple bucks more but you get what you pay for with these things.

has anyone tried the horizontal water nipples? i cant seem to get my two week old coturnix chicks to take to them. they have a small cup on them that will hold some water once it runs out they arent able to get more. almost seems like they cant trigger it to put out more water. any ideas on getting these to work would be greatly appreciated.


this is the type i have. i have six of them mounted into a plastic five gallon bucket. the birds understand this is where water comes from but they just cant seem to make it happen. i switched to it a couple days ago for about three hours but had to switch back to normal waterers. now im kinda wondering if i should have just went with the vertical nipples instead.

These are all I use for my quail after they are 10-14 days old. (you might want to wait a bit longer for smaller quail.....mine are jumbo brown coturnix) I take their cup drinker out and put the horizontal nipple drinker in. The number one rule to getting any bird to learn how to use these is to TAKE ALL OTHER DRINKERS OUT. If they aren't thirsty they'll just kinda play with it but not learn. Putting their old water in all the time just makes them hold out while they wait for you to put it back. I've raised hundreds of quail with the HN's and have never had them not learn how to use it.

Where did you those little containers and holders?? Looks like a great way to have the chicks learn!
