I've got a really nice (NOT) hormonal rooster. He's a speckled sussex. He's been great, was the friendliest bird in my flock, then his dang hormones hit and now he's mean as ever. Every time I go to feed them (1 roo, 11 hens), if I turn my back on him he charges me. He's 5 months old, and I know that's when they get all rowdy. He doesn't have spurs yet, but I know those are coming. He charged my husband twice, and after a kick from him, hasn't tried him since.
I tried the whole carry him around thing, and pet him, and literally, he'll charge me right after I've set him down. He also, ALWAYS charges my two year old. So far, nothing is working on him. I know he can't hurt me, but I also know that in a month or so, he will be able to. And he could do some real damage to my daughter.
I'm 8 1/2 months pregnant and am SICK of this guy. I'm tired of having to watch my back every time I got out to feed and water them. Will he quit? Will he eventually settle down? Or is he just going to be a bad bird?
I'm not against killing him, would love to not have to though. He's a pretty bird, but I just can't deal with this.
Any suggestions?
