This is my families second go at chicken keeping. We lived in a rural area, then moved into town for a few years and are back in the country. Thankfully. During our first experience I swear I had so many roosters from a batch of EE that I had ordered online. Most were roos. All but one were so sweet. Of course we had to re-home a bit of them but we had barely any aggression issues. This year-i have gone through four roosters due to severe human aggression. I didn't raise any of these guys from peeps, but, i didn't realize it was SO hard to find one that will not flog me and my kiddos. I just got a new guy two days ago. He's an adorable satin silkie roo, a year old. I figured going silkie it would be hard to go wrong....wrong. I'm pretty sure hes the most aggressive of all the ones I've had 😭.

Some are just Butthead but some aggression is learned. If you don't want fertile eggs, you don't need one.
I was considering not having one with all of this bad luck, but I am trying to work on a silkie project. I'd like to hatch some out and have a go at raising some to hopefully get a decent one. All of my hens have great personalities but I'd like to have a decent mannered roo first to breed them to. Lol. I may have to just wait for chick season and buy and raise a dozen or so and cross my fingers lol

I just got my first rooster a few weeks ago and I was so worried because I didn't want a mean one. He is 7 months old and he runs to greet me, he lets us walk all around in the coop with no issues, he lets us walk and feed them while free ranging, and even lets me pick him up during roosting time. He really is just so cool to look at and sweet, there are good ones out there! I am hoping he stays this way, fingers crossed!

Hatching and introducing them as tiny chicks in a separate area where they can meet with wire between them is ideal. I take my chicks out to a small coop at 2 or 3 days old. Once they’re 4 to 6 weeks old you can let the chicks out to mingle with the bigs but be sure they have access to that separate area as a safe place to escape. The hens will then teach the boys to be good to them, and you can see who also interacts well with you and the kids. Regardless, it’s best not to have young kids around roosters generally. Even with a sweet roo that won’t attack you as an adult, a kid can be a totally different story. Especially when hormones are running high.
