horrible tragedy

Please don't give up on the baby chickens or big ones either. About 3 years ago, we started with about 24 baby chickens in our homemade trailer .....safe and secure....but no, 4 wild dogs with one neighbor hood dog got in and destroyed all of them. I stayed off work, found ou where the pack was and got the animals picked up,,,,but I cried for days.

We resecured the coop and now have them replaced and about 250 chickens at present.

God bless you.

I lost mine once to a Florida bobcat, I went and bought a live trap and got some revenge for my little buddys. Just an idea ( made me feel a little better ).

Wow, surprise to hear about the little RIR. Surely it deserves a name now that it survived the attack. I had one that survived a hawk attack ( the hawk was sitting right on top of it!) I named her L.C. (aka Lucky chicken, aka Elsie).

It's hard not to beat yourself up about it, but one thing I've learned with livestock and animals is you can try and cover every base on prevention possible, try to prevent every imaginable thing from happening, and yet something completely unexpected can happen. I think it's just one of those unwritten laws when dealing with animals.

The cheepest thing I found to secure up a coop was hard ware cloth on the bottom. It keeps out all the nasties. a 4 foot roll and some flat headed nails you can secure up the floor quiclky. It will stop things digging in and helping them to your little ones.

Very sorry for your loss, it is quite a horrible site to see and remember.

You can find the hard ware cloth for under 35.00 , normally I over lap it like 6 inches, tack up on the sides of the floor then run full lengh across the floor all the way to the other side, repete this till the floor is secure. All my runs have it , floor, top and sides. BTW you get locked in too with this so never let the lock slip on the door like mine did. You cant get out they cant get in LOL.

I know how you feel...we lost two wonderful hens and a great, kind new jersey giant rooster. A weasel got them
My hen(Apricot) was one of the hens. She was soo nice.
I cried and i still miss her.

And like other people said, build your coop to be better and THEN get some more babies!

I am so sorry for your loss. I know from experience the guilt & pain you are feeling. Give yourself some time to grive your loved chicks, tighten up or remodel your coop, & get yourself some new babies to love. Once a chicken lover-always a chicken lover. You can't "replace" the ones you lost. But - you can find new loves!
