Y’all I need help!! We saw a leghorn with a bump on her foot last week. Unfortunately, I am just now able to tend to her foot. We soaked in warm epsom for 10 mins. Massaged and was able to squeeze out a rice size pus ball maybe? The big black bump looks to be attacked to the skin on the top with an open hole underneath. Nothing else would come out and I didn’t want to squeeze too crazy hard. When I didn’t try to grab around, blood came out. I don’t want to go poking and prodding unknowingly. While I wait for y’all’s help, I put triple AB cream on it and wrapped. She’s solo in hospital. What do I do? I have another leghorn from same flock that has a smaller bump without the big black part

Sometimes you have to squeeze quite a bit to get the pus plug out. I would soak again tomorrow for 15-20 minutes and try to remove the scab. Then try again to get all of the pus out. Replace the antibiotic ointment, a 2x2 gauze pad and vet wrap or tape. There are many methods to use to treat bumblefoot, such as a betadine and sugar dressing changed daily, or Prid dressing. I have done the surgery with a scalpel in the past, but it may not be necessary.

She has a condition called bumblefoot. It is very common. Your first instinct of soaking and trying to remove the infection was correct:) The black mass is a scab and can come off. There may be a hard core of pus underneath the scab that can be squeezed out or there may just be a stringy mess that won't come out easily. Try to get as much of the mess out, pack the hole with triple antibiotic and then wrap her foot with a piece of gauze and vet wrap. You will probably need to repeat the soak and cleaning out the hole several times before it heals.
