Horse club

Hey all! Popping in here to say it's been about a year since I began to train Ginger, my barn's most recent lesson horse! I'm sure most of you have heard about her lol.

It's crazy how time flies. I'm so grateful to have this mare in my life and to have gotten the opportunity to train her for my barn. She's the motivator to make me want to become a horse trainer now, and has taught me a lot about working with these amazing animals.

Honestly I'd thought at this time we'd be moving forward with trailer training and hopefully looking into a few small local shows to bring her to, but life took a twist for Ginger when she injured her ankle/foot and became lame because of bad angling/conformation of her foot.

She's been off for nearly two months on stall rest, and it's taken this rest and bar shoes for her to start feeling better and begin the healing process. It's very likely this is permanent, and we will have to be very cautious from now on with her. (she's always been a tiny bit off, so there is quite possibly an old injury in her past we don't know about. I know she has scars on that foot from what I've been told look like it was caused by wire or something that was wrapped around her ankle)

Just recently we've started to put her back into very light work at a walk/trot. I haven't even had the chance to jump on her and school her again since we've been trying to keep more advanced kids or just her leaser on her so Ginger doesn't have to carry a ton of weight. (not that I weigh a lot, but still) She hasn't been totally confined to her stall, and got out often before and now, just hand walked/grazed. We think she's finally getting on the mend and doing much better so I'm hoping it'll stay that way.

On the flip side, over the last few months I've begun to work with a new horse (for myself) we've had for a couple years. His name is Phoenix and he was a rescue; he had health issues so he wasn't ridden for a year, but now he's feeling much better and I'm getting him back into shape and riding and he's doing wonderful! He's the sweetest little horse you could ever meet. Neighs to me every time I walk back by his pen.

I hope everyone else's horses are at least doing better than poor Ginger, and that every body has a lovely new year and will get to reach their goals and spend lots of good time with their horses!

Whereabouts are you located in Washington, Dawnwolf ? I'm guessing from the vineyards in your photo that you are nearby Yakima, more or less? I'm on the west side, and we got blasted with snowmageddon on Sunday, and more today, with nothing but freezing temps in between, so there were layers of ice on the roads with more snow on top.

I was spending Christmas with family members, our two dogs and one cat, at an Air B&B on Vashon Island, and we got stuck there for three extra days. We had no way to leave, since the place was at the bottom of a steep, icy hill, plus even if we could have gotten out, the south ferry was cancelled due to a frozen hoist and the north ferry was down to one boat. At least all of us brought extra food, so we were safe, warm, and well-fed!

I finally got home today, but ended up having to leave my car there until it thaws. We ordered tire chains for my sister's car from the local place on the island, but they didn't have chains that would fit my car. A towing place couldn't get down there to tow us out, but they told us about a Facebook site where people were updating road conditions, and one poster was offering rides to people in need for whatever donation they could afford, as he had a 4-wheel drive with chains. So this super-nice Good Samaritan picked up our chains from the auto-parts store and brought them to us, helped put them on, and stuck around in case if they didn't do the job, he would make a run to the grocery store for us.

My sister was able to get her car up the hill with the new chains, so we stored the non-essentials in my car and crammed 4 people, two dogs, one cat and essential stuff into her car, and made it on the ferry, and then home.

I feel stupid for being so unprepared - when snow is forecast around here, it usually means a dusting that melts away quickly, unless you are going over the passes. I should have at least had chains for my car on hand, and I will from now on.

But I also feel really good ! Despite all the negative crap going on in the world, there are still so many wonderful people who are trying to help, to make things better, even for total strangers.
Oh wow yes we haven’t had weather like that yet. Hopefully we don’t because it sounds from you that it’s not the best!

I have not been on a ride in forever. Super busy with chores and home improvements. Already getting warm and pretty soon it's gunna be hot :hit.
