Twin foals born tonight in Claxton are in critical need of a nursing mare after the mother did not make it. She delivered two healthy twins but the Mare was not able to make it. Both twins are in desperate need of a Nursing mare or donkey. Twin foals are very rare and their chances of survival are extremely slim. Please share our story and help us save these two fillies. I have heard of a lot of foals being raised on goat milk. If you can't find a goat I personally would try the same formula a lot of people use for raising baby kids. You take a gallon of whole cow milk from the store, pour off about a quart, add a cup of buttermilk and a can of evaporated milk to the jug and shake well. Add back enough of the milk you poured off to fill the jug and shake well. This works well for kids from the breeds of goats that produce richer than average milk. I think mare's milk is richer than cow milk so this formula ought to work for foals, too.

Foals hit the ground with no antibodies. The first thing a foal needs is colostrum, which a mare/jenny that had been nursing for a while wouldn't have. If that wasn't available during the first few hours after birth, the foals would probably need a transfusion of IgG to get their immune systems up and running.

There are commercial milk replacers available, and many a foal has been raised on them. On the Marestare forum, there is a thread about rigging a nipple onto an igloo cooler to covert it into a foal feeder. Marestare has a lot of great information, but you have to become a member now to read it.
