I don't have a problem with people eating horses, I am a sane person and I would eat it the same way I would a cow, pig, chicken or any other meat. As long as they are treated humanely then kill away! I'll eat it.

Cattle are smarter than people give them credit for. Ever met a Spanish Fighting Cow? The bulls are amazing, sure but the cows. . . . Darn smart and extremely athletic buggers.

Personally I have no problem with horse meat, in fact I have a problem with people who do, yet little with the meat we eat on a normal basis due to bias on species. I could even find myself eating dog meat, as long as the dog was not mine and lived a happy, healthy life. Because to me that's all it boils down to - A happy healthy life. If the horse had that, sure, I'd eat it!

I am beginning to see that allot of people posting here have never frequented the horse auctions and do not realize what shape most of these animals arrive in. Most are neglected, abused, underweight, and have infections whether interal or external. Not what I would call quality food. I grew up eating horse meat on occasion so I do not have a problem with that, but now that I am older and understand that all food should be treated humanely and be well taken care of up to the point of slaughter. I use to raise Black Angus and they had all the pasture they could eat. This is how I want my dinner to start out, healthy, happy and free. I have a problem because I know that this is not the way these horses were treated that find their way to auctions. I buy local meats as much as possible. I go to the local farmers and buy pork, beef, etc. I raise my own chickens for eggs. I want to know that my food was healthy and happy and not sick or mistreated.

"Cheval" aka as horse meat.
While I wouldn't eat it, others countries do. Take a look at the "Camelot Auction" in NJ. They have what they call the "Kill pen". Horses going on a weekly basis for slaughter and the meat to be shipped overseas.

Heck, they worship cattle in India and we eat them. Same with dogs, raised as a food source elsewhere. I raise rabbits for show but they are also raised for meat.

Cows can be trained. Many animals can.......And they are so cute when attached to their owners. Saw a team of small pulling oxen that adored their "daddy". They would pull themselves dead at just a word and a touch. (no whip) They lived for him no doubt about that! Chickens are not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but they can be trained. One of the 4Her's had a Bantam Hen trained to ride on his shoulder like a parrot-and she would play dead in his hand, lying on her back..so adorable!

I have eaten rabbit. Good stuff! And nothing better than a perfectly cooked to medium filet mignon..........

Horse auctions and horse farmers are two different things. One CAN buy horses from an auction and fed/fatten up for slaughter if one inclines to do so. Nothing wrong with bringing home an animal from an auction for that very reason.

CAn you butcher your own horses? I see why not if you are wanting to use them for meat to feed your dogs if you have NO emotional attactments, bought it from someone who is hard up for money or from an auction. I just don't see why a government has to do this manner making it illegial. After all back in the Indian and Early American days, they DID butcher horses to eat.

There is a time and place for these animals to go, thanks to us being "selfish" and guttonish about our horses, breeding them out for money or not finding homes for them. If no one takes them, where would they go? Yep to slaughter. Its sad but its a reality.

Have you seen some of the CATTLE at auctions that are bought by feedlots and packing houses that go directly to slaugher? The old ones that are nearly skin and bones...the cripple ones, the ones missing an eye? . Those all become food as well and aren't really what I would call good eating. I would like to think most of those are process into animal food but I know better. Same concept with horses I guess.

Just as many fields have been plowed with oxen in this world as with horses, and in many places oxen are ridden as well. They have also pulled the implements of battle for many an army. So do you feel the same about eating cows?

A friend of my husbands dad drove a big truck for McDonalds. Most of the meat for your quarter-pounder comes from DDD cattle. Dead. Diseased. Dying.

Obviously, ALL cattle are dead before becoming burger, but I mean dead in the truck BEFORE slaughter.
