Horse Talk

Some of those people are very annoying haha there's a lot of people who think that no animal should have a job and we use/abuse them or they're "slaves" and it's cruel, etc. It's so annoying. Like I'm sorry, but I personally think it's cruel to NOT give some of these working animals a job. Like the herding breeds of dogs and like Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds etc. Maybe some training methods are a little excessive or "mean" depending on the handler but these dogs LOVE to work. And Malinois in particular seem to have no off switch. They love to GO GO GO lol and I know for sure that if you had one just sit on the couch all day every day, they would not only be VERY VERY unhappy but I'm also not even sure that is possible for them to do lol they would become very destructive too and likely constantly bother you. And maybe even develop aggression or behavior problems. They are NOT pets or couch potatoes. And even breeds designed to have an off switch like GSDs still need to work or play/exercise to burn off that energy before they can settle in for the night. And also huskies. People say dog sledding is cruel but those dogs LOVE to run. Like if you have ever visited a dog sledding kennel, you can see just how excited they get when you get their harnesses and start hooking them up. And how loud and hyped up they are to just GO already, they are SO excited. And then they start running and they settle in and shut up lol if you've ever actually seen it, there is no denying it. And that's why I hate when people complain and ***** without ever having SEEN the dog (or horse, etc.) Working and not working. You can see how happy they are to get to work, to have a job, a purpose, and please you, and how sad and depressed, stressed, whatever, they are when you deny them that. And often work is just a big game for them anyway. Not to mention some dogs (and horses and other animals) have very important purposes. Like police dogs, service dogs or horses, etc. Etc. Like if you think them working is cruel or we're making them slaves or whatever, then okay, we'll make you a special section of the country where there are no police dogs to help apprehend subjects, detect bombs or drugs/narcotics, etc., maybe give you a disability too but you're not allowed to have a service animal for it cause all of that is "cruel" and see how long you last LOL i seriously think that these people should be required to live like that for a certain period of time or at least required to visit these facilities and see it for themselves before commenting.

Sorry, got off on a rant there and sorry to go so crazy on dogs hahaha

Amish people also rely on horses

But anyway, I'm conflicted on the carriages part too. I think there need to be better regulations. I personally think the carriages are a classic, historical part of the city and should not be banned. BUT. Like I said, I think there should be better regulations and maybe only organizations, even small ones, allowed to run them, rather than individuals. Because a lot of the horses DO work crazy long hours or stand in the sun for hours with no water. So I think there should be ethical laws for the treatment or at least ones that are actually enforced. Maybe they can only work so many hours before having to rest for a certain period of time or being swapped out for another set of horses. I think as long as we change the focus to be about the history and the horses rather than about the money and making it a tourist trap then it should be fine. And there should be info on how the horses are treated with different people or companies so that the people can decide for themselves which to ride and then maybe there would be more incentive to treat them better. That said, I do also think it is a little bit weird having them in the city with no grass. They should take them into the parks or outside the city sometimes and let them eat some grass. But that might be too expensive or time consuming.

I loved your rant! Lol and it reminded for my particular distaste for people who say milking a cow is abusive (even if it's a single cow on your family farm) because they think that you HAVE to take the baby from them in order to milk them and that you're having the cow "raped" in order to get the baby and that your forcing them to make milk
1f602.png
One time I found a person who said "cows in the wild aren't milked and they're fine" COWS IN THE WILD?!
But anyways lol. Agreed that they should have better regulations. And I assume these horses go to some type of boarding barn at night? So they may possibly be getting grass.
But life would definitely be difficult, and sad, if we didn't have animals. wether they're working for us, producing food for us, or just being companions.

Wow thank you! Lol

And UGH I hate when people say an animal is being "raped" LOL people do it with dogs and other animals too. I don't know, I think AI is a little bit weird but also necessary to produce the best animals. And many people still don't use AI as it is expensive and in that case, the animal could easily get away from the male LOL like I mean really, it is NATURE, and the female can easily fight off the male if she's not ready lol and even if not, animals have no concept of "rape", that is a human construct. The animal is not going to be psychologically damaged like a human lol and besides, even animals in the wild sometimes do it to each other. Like dolphins.

I also hate when they say milking an animal or anything like that is cruel. Now, in a factory farm setting where they actually do take the baby away and the living conditions in general are terrible, sure, it's a little bit cruel. But even if you don't take the baby away, animals can produce milk well after the baby is weaned as long as there is a need aka you keep milking them. That's even true with humans LOL

People are ridiculous.

I once heard someone say, I think maybe even here on BYC, say that taking eggs away from chickens was cruel...... that they are "their" eggs and we have no right to take them. Lmfao like... they lay the eggs whether we take them or not and fertile or not and they will just rot if we don't take them or they'll go broody and starve when they never hatch.... But that seems to be the attitude of a lot of vegans. Not that I have a problem with vegans, most are very nice. But some think honey is cruel lol

But yeah, definitely need more regulations. And yeah, I think they have barns or warehouses. Doubt there's any grass, it's a building and time consuming growing it. I'm sure they probably get grain and hay but I meant like real green grass and also sun. Like being turned loose to graze and exercise and play.

And yeah, exactly!!!

Lol glad you think so! I mostly just commented so the thing about breeding wasn't the first word showing up

And right!? So annoying. I think people should be required to spend time on a farm. It would do them good lol

And lol makes sense

What do y'all think of the carriage horses in New York? I'm not sure what my stance on it is, but I can say that all of the "animal cruelty" people are very annoying. I saw a comment on one post about it where someone said "these horses should be running free on a big ranch in Texas!" Like sorry to burst your bubble but any horse living on a big ranch in Texas is probably gonna be working it's BUTT off, not just frolicking through the field 24/7. And others say "horses aren't suppose to work/have a job!" And I'm like ??? Yes they are. June loves having a job. Horses have been made to work forever, transportation, plowing, cattle work, etc.
Maybe the carriage horses are mistreated, but I wish people who have probably never even been around a horse would stop going on about it and saying all kinds of non sense things about horses

The regulations on the carriage horses already are pretty extreme, heck, my horses have at times had a harder life than those horses...

They must have a 15 minute break for every 2 hours worked (I used to fox hunt, several hours of riding with rare breaks, and even then I was sitting on him and he didn't have access to feed or water)
They are not allowed to work more than 9 hours per day, and leave the stable no more than 1/2 hour before work and return no later than 1/2 hour after work.
They don't work when it is colder that -18 or over 90 degrees (my horses have worked a lot hotter than that)
Horses are to be blanketed while between rides in the winter (my horses don't wear blankets)
No lame or ill horses are allowed to work (ok, I follow this one)
They are not allowed in bridges or tunnels.\

Personally, I don't agree with horses in the city because of lack of turnout, but they work nearly every day, so they get plenty of excercise, and most show horses don't get turned out or if they do it's in a very small paddock for about 30 minutes... so really, it's not too bad for the carriage horses.

Wow I had no idea the rules were so strict! They must have changed them maybe. Some of them seem a bit extreme and like someone who doesn't know horses came up with them.... and it should really be 95 or 100 because it gets over 90 in NYC a lot. But I suppose it is good they're not being abused anymore.

Why the no bridges or tunnels one though? That seems stupid especially as there's bridges and tunnels in the park? Unless they mean the road?

And yeah, i dont like the no turn out but it is pretty cushy lol true about the exercise but i more meant running free and having fun. Why don't show horses get to go out? Fear of them getting hurt or dirty?

Race horses don't get much turnout, either.

What do you expect from people that, the closest they have ever come to a horse is Disney movies like Spirit?

There is no placating people who have the mindset that there is some sort of moral infraction in owning animals. Nothing you can do makes up for the fact that the animals' existence is warped by their association with humans. As far as they are concerned, everything you do with an animal is wrong; because the simple act of domestication has so changed their bodies and minds that their very lives are tortured mockeries. The kindest thing anyone can do to these poor, damaged creatures is ease them out of this world as quickly as possible, because they are unfit for the lives their ancestors lived.

You can't, you simply can't find a "middle ground" with people like this.

Very very true, Bunny! Sad but true!!!

And in fact, there are people who believe that simply owning animals and having pets is cruel. PETA started that I think but PETA is a terrible and crazy organization anyway. But they seriously thinking owning pets is cruel and they should all be running free LOL they wouldn't stand a chance out there! And most pets would come running back to their owners! I'm not sure about Gator, he's fairly independent and can be a roamer so I think he'd like the opportunity to run free but I think he would eventually come back because he loves us too much. Or I would hope lol he also doesn't like being alone long. But I suppose if he found a pack to join he might ditch us LOL
