Horse Talk

Think about your ground work - how do you get the horse to move its hindquarters to the left? By applying pressure on the right side behind the drive line. That's where your heels are when you are kicking her . . . .

Anyways.. I will try some different leg pressure, seat positions etc. and see what I come up with. I'm bound to find something that works eventually. I'm sure I'll get on her today all bound and determined to correct her stubbornness.. and she'll just do everything I ask

I swear she only does things like that when I've got a plan in mind. Yesterday my plan was to go for a nice canter all the way down the drive way and around the barn since she was being so consistent in her trot but nope she had other ideas! I guess she just doesn't like determined mom as much as fun mom.
In other news! I'm sure most of you will be happy to hear this, I've put my plans for breeding June or Jade, on hold. And for good reason. I have a newfound horsey goal/passion that -somewhat- goes along with my mustang plans

I mean you and me - I've been thinking English, you've been talking Western.

This is what you've been talking about, isn't it?

lol yes kind of. I didn't even think about the fact that you may have been thinking English (I don't know anything about English!). Most "cowboy" style riding, which is how I was taught, is a kick or squeeze with the left leg, means to go right, and vise versa. When I first started riding it was difficult for me to wrap my mind around that. I always thought if you were turning a horse right you'd pull on the right rein and kick with the right leg, but when people watched me ride like that that told me I was totally wrong! And I had to learn to kick with my outside leg. I'll still get mixed up sometimes and use the inside but it's not often now.
And I'm glad you used that video, I think I'm going to use what he did in the end to teach neck reining to June. She's picking up on it but it's very slow.
And as for side passing, I believe what I was taught is (based off a horse that knows neck reining and leg pressure) if you want move to the right, you lay the left rein on the horse, open your right leg so it's not touching the horse, move your left heel back and apply pressure, and your horse should side pass to the left. I could be wrong though, I've never side passed

I know Jade knows how to do it I just haven't practiced yet

Just wanted to say that June may be in heat on the days she seems stubborn/difficult/reluctant. You should write down when you do notice her heat cycles as well if you plan on breeding her.

I've thought of that too.. it's still not an excuse to act up but that could be the reason why she is. It's hard for me to tell when her heat cycles are with no geldings around because she doesn't get all show off-y. But she has been hateful this week so that could very well be it. And if I ever decide to breed I'll keep track for sure, but my plans have changed for now

So after much debate I decided that Jade was a sooty buckskin. Well that was in her summer coat. Now look at her! I walked out today and was like.. who are you and what have you done with my horse?

She still has a cute buckskin-y belly though

This was her summer coat.. she still looked like this a week ago!

She FELL ASLEEP on the saddle today. Does anyone else's horse love their saddle this much?

(Also, with Jade, I can do ground work with her totally fine, just like any other horse, but once I get in the saddle I'm SHAKING nervous, and I have no reason to be, anybody have any good ideas on how to get myself to trust her?)

Hey ~ or should I say Hay guys :p

Just wanted to drop in quick and leave my exciting news. I bought a rgistred AMHR and AMHA miniature horse and sh's expcting. She's going to foal tonight I think as far as I can tell. She's a chestnut/sorrel pinto and she's 16 years old, bt she dosn't look a day over ten. I'm really looking forward to raising her foal(s).
