Well, if I fenced part, that part would be fully enclosed, just not the whole yard. Or if I let them loose in the yard... yeahhh, probably not a good idea I suppose lol would they run off do you think? Even with all that green grass? We are set back in the woods a bit so it's pretty quiet. The only concern would be if they got to the road because there is a slightly busy main road behind us BUT there is a street before that (the neighbors we can see in the back are on it ha) and in front of us is a condo/townhome development which doesn't really get much traffic so it's a pretty long road to the road. And across the busy road is a cranberry bog. So anyway, probably not a good idea to let them loose but if they did run off, I think I could catch them before they got to any main roads. But also I wouldn't just turn them loose, I would either be out there with them or I would be watching from the window occasionally so as soon as they disappeared from the yard, I would be able to see that and I would run outside and get them probably before they left the property. Especially cause we have a lot of windows in the front and the room where the TV is, I can just open the curtains and sit in the chair next to the window and have a perfect view. However, that would be a lot of work having to watch them 24/7 LOL are they really that sneaky and fast?

Maybe I could just do what I do with the chickens, let them out for a few hours before bedtime. Although with the horses maybe it could be morning or afternoon instead.

Can horses be locked up that long? They wouldn't be in a stall, I'd build a big pen.

But you know, maybe it would just be easier to just fence LOL

I need to measure exactly how many feet the yard is because I'm assuming it's going to be really expensive but maybe it won't be so bad.

Run off? Probably not. Walk off? ABSOLUTELY! In a heartbeat - with you standing there watching. They probably wouldn't start running until you tried to catch them.

When I first got my minis, I would let them out occasionally to graze on my lawn. I put halters and leads on them to make catching them easier; even treats won't bring 'em to you if they don't want to get caught. Minis are smart; they learn pretty quickly not to get freaked about stepping on a lead or getting it around a leg. It worked pretty well (Betsy only kidnapped me once) but I got tired of having to bring them back constantly, so I built some fence panels that I could move around the yard to contain them instead.

Do yours not get "escaped horse syndrome?" When mine see an open gate that is usually closed, they throw their heads up and thunder off through it, even if it's into another field, once they run the entire fence line and find that they are still fenced in they settle, but if there isn't a fence they just keep running around and acting dumb. I've had to chase mine up the road on several occasions because someone opened a gate to drive through and one of the horses happened to pop their head up and notice the gate was open....

On the other hand, once I get my hands on them, they are easy to get back home, most of the time I just say "what do you think you're doing?? Go home!" and they turn around and march back... I've also had them break a fence and get loose in a big hay field and had to go hiking looking for them, I spotted one 2 hills over and yelled at him and the entire herd came running back to me, then I had to deal with walking back to the barn with 6 horses cantering circles around me bucking and kicking at each other... it's a wonder I didn't get flattened...

That makes sense, they're probably brats and smart LOL our old dog used to play that game. He would hear you, look right at you, but then turn right around and walk down the driveway, into the woods, etc. and not come LOL

I guess they just have selective hearing sometimes hah

I feel like a lot of horses are like that haha and it's definitely surprising you didn't get trampled lol
 
"FedEx left my gate open" is a reference to another video he did; he wound up helping a woman get her horses off the side of the highway when they got out. She seemed more concerned with assigning blame for the incident than in getting the animals safely back where they belonged, and really didn't seem to know diddly about communicating with the horses in a way that would move them effectively. She kept repeating "FedEx left my gate open," and was probably still saying it when he and the cop who had helped round up her horses left.

Ahhh okay, I was wondering where that came from! Haha apparently a few people in the comments thought it was a nickname for someone. I haven't seen that other video but I only discovered his channel recently. But already I like a lot of what he does and the no nonsense attitude, though sometimes he's a bit harsh to people haha

But people in that first video think he is abusing his horses and that's why they ran and/or that he's being abusive in that video.... :rolleyes:
