Horses!!!!!!!!

Me im ok sick from allergies, but ok. My horses are well, shorty still kinda iffy with his foot, but getting better each day.

I am sorry! I hope you get better same with Shorty!

We're good. Spring warm weather came on suddenly and horse's winter fuzz is everywhere. I have two girls from next door come and help with putting them in and feeding and they shed them and brush them too this time of year. Because the winter was extraordinarily long and hard my two oldsters (pony @ 28, quarterback mare@ 29) look a bit sucked in and bony. Hope the grass comes in soon.

I know right? That hair!!!! Even though it does not get cold here in LA, most of my horses get a fuzzy coat! It is like 76 degrees here, I am SO hot!!!!!!

We have just under an acre and we don't have a use for the pasture, so we let a neighbor use it for two of his horses. One of which hasn't had human contact in like, a year? So she doesn't go near anyone willingly at the moment.

So apparently they told my mother that that horse was pregnant, but she failed to tell me, then forgot about it completely. The horse didn't show her pregnancy, so I had no idea. So when there was a newborn foal in the pasture this morning, you can imagine how surprised I was...

This, on the other hand, absolutely burns me up. Anira, I am not yelling at you, I'm just yelling. That mare is in TERRIBLE condition for a newly foaled mare. Her body condition score can't be more than about a 3; how in the world can she be expected to produce milk for that young'un!? To say nothing of what this has already done to the foal. There is a protocol of shots and wormings that are designed to make sure that the foal has the best possible start on life; if this mare hasn't been handled in about a year, obviously, this hasn't been done for her. Clearly, the mare hasn't had adequate nutrition, either, so the foal has been shorted all ways 'round. Nursing a foal generally takes a toll even on the healthiest mares, and this mare is already underweight -

I know you're not yelling at me, since as I said they're not my horses. She looked properly fed to me before she had her baby, but as I also said, I didn't know she was pregnant and it didn't show that she was. But they did know she was pregnant and apparently weren't taking care of her properly. She's just been being fed the same as their other girl. I think they had a vet look at her once since they moved her into our pasture.

There's really nothing I can do about it, since they aren't being that neglected. And they probably wouldn't listen to me even if I tried to talk to them about it.

Yeah I agree mum does look awfully tucked up with ribs showing. A pregnancy is hard on the system so it would be nice if she had some special care. Can you talk to your neighbours about this? Maybe offer a bit of alfalfa hay or extra grain for her as a friendly gesture?

I have commented to them, but they think she'll be just fine. I will keep an eye on them, as I am home most of the day and only work nights. If they seem to get worse or don't improve at all, I will report the owners. I have nothing I can give them myself, as I can't afford to have horses.

Okay. Trust your feelings. But don't be afraid to get up in their grill if you think it's needed.
