I'm usually chicken obsessed like everyone else around here, but I thought I would make an unusual plug!!! My family is hosting our 4th exchange student this year and I am hoping to convince others to do the same. There are lots of arguments as to why people can't, but most can be changed!!! These great kids come from over 50 countries world wide, with their own health insurance and their own spending money. You provide a bedroom (that can be shared) and 2 meals per day, breakfast and dinner. You will have to drive them around as much as your own children, but they learn to car-pool and if you're in the right area, public transportation!!! If you have any thoughts or interest, please feel free to bombard me!

i would love to do that or even fresh air kids. but i don't have any other kids here so it wouldn't be much fun.

We did this two years in a row in 2005 and 2006 after living in Italy during the summer of 2004. We had a total of 3 students - 2 girls from France and one from Spain - over that time period. It was the most wonderful experience and I cannot recommend it enough to other families. I would like to do it again soon.

We are still in touch with the boy from Spain, Mateo. He is like my son. We have even become close with his family. He is in college now and we are hoping to be able to visit him within a couple years.

There are successful placements with no children in the host home, some students actually prefer being the "only child" and will put it in their application!

My brother did this.

My grandfather hosted the other child.

How long did you guys host them for?

I don't have any children and live a little bit out of town.

Our first 2 students were from Sweden. We spent 2 1/2 weeks in Sweden divided between the 2 families, we went to Bergen Norway, where the sun actually was shining (a rare thing) my children got to see the fiords, and meet their Swedish relatives!!! It has and continues to be a great experience!

When I was a kid we hosted many exchange students and once a whole exchange family (dad, mom and 2 sons). When our daughters were younger, we hosted 2 Japanese girls through the LABO/4-H exchange program. It was a great experience. We hosted a Spanish student later on. In the case of the LABO exchange our daughters then had the chance to visit Japan and stay with the girls we had hosted--definitely a wonderful experience for them. One girl has maintained contact with our younger daughter for the past 18 years. Hosting exchange students is an unforgetable experience.

You do not need to have children. If you are single, & childless and you want to host an exchange student, the organizations will look a little closer at you to make sure you are acceptable.
