Hi all. I have my last silkie girl. She's small, we lost her mama last week when a rooster broke her neck mating. Iv never seen such aggressive behavior. Same breed.
So I only have her left now and would really like to get some more but I'm in parts of country where I struggle to find any. So one of my previous roosters got homed with my neighbour. She suggested today we let them have a date and see if he covers her. He's luckily also small.
How long should I let them be together. I feel like an idiot here LOL.

Is your last silkie hen laying eggs?

Generally if it's just 2 chickens in a coop then it would take 2 to 5 days. You want the rooster to mount the hen several times a day. To ensure she carries enough sperm packets in her. So every egg she lays for month will be fertilized.

You should also check the fertility of the egg once a day by cracking it. And examine the yolk for a bullseye mark.

At the moment she isn't laying anything. I suspect the eggs her mom was sitting on before she died were half of cupcakes. Buttercup was the mom. Then we loaned a incubator from our neighbour's which malfunctioned and we lost the 9 eggs.

OK so I'll have him come visit here. There's just her and him then. For a few days. I hope he won't go back home and bully anyone then. His hen that side has just hatched 5 babies. He's been great with them.

Wow this is some serious stuff. Even with the eggs from before I candled them and they were all fertilized and growing. I was so heartsore losing those.

The best time for them to pair up is when she starts laying eggs.

When she does get fertile eggs she will hatch them herself. Added bonus is she has no one around to bother her while she broods the eggs. So it will be stress free for her experience.

She hasn't layed anything since she lost buttercup and the roosters. I have her on the look but not touch method on the 5 kapokkir bantam. They are very small bantams. I hope she does lay soon. 5 years in and I'm still learning every day.
