4 tsp. yeast
1 cup milk, scalded then cooled to room temp.
3 large eggs
3/4 cup sugar
1 stick melted butter
1 tsp. machlebe
1 tsp. mastic gum
1 tsp. vanilla
5 to 6 cups of bread flour
If mastic gum is in rock candy form, put in ziploc bag and smash as fine as possible and add to scalded milk until it melts. (Put the cooled milk and mastic gum in a plastic cup you can throw away. It gets really sticky!)
I add all the ingredients together from the top of the recipe down.
Let rise, punch down, let rise again, punch down, wait 10 minutes and then divide into 3 and braid.
Brush with egg white and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 35 to 40 min. or until it sounds hollow when tapped.
Tastes even better the second day in the toaster! Enjoy!
I grew up in Clearwater, Fl and there are lots of Greek shops all over there and Tarpon Springs is right between here and there too.
I hope to make this lovely bread myself very soon.
