Hot weather advice?

Only had 1 or 2 days over 100 here in calif, but the chooks stay under my fig tree, and we keep the soil moist there for them and for the fig. it's branches hang down to the ground and they have made it their home away from coop while free ranging.
The bottles of ice water sound like a good idea for when the serious heat hits this summer (if it does at all, not always a sure thing here).

Love the frozen water bottle idea. I felt sorry for them yesterday panting with their wings held out. They are in a 3 sided coop in the shade of a huge oak tree and still they were too hot. I was thinking, 'you guys ain't seen nothing yet...' it was around 87 degrees. We are going to have multiple triple digit days over the summer.

Frozen water bottles is a cheap and easy solution!!

I just bought a Mister kit from Sam's Club today. It was $29.00 and has enough tubing and nozzles for 32 feet. I hope to hook it up this weekend. The heat factor will be 110 this weekend...my poor birdies!

I also use fans and like to serve up cold watermelon for them!

we are ending a week of upper 90s here, so I have appreciated all the info on this thread. I have been putting out frozen bottles of water, I filled old large jug containers- an old vinegar jug and an old lemonade jug- they are a bit bigger than a 2 liter.

I set them inside a planter base and the condensation collects in the base and the birds gather around and seem to really like it as it melts. They all gather under our deck that is a sandy area- shady and cool sand and sit around the frozen jugs.

They don't move much between 1pm-5pm!!

loving all these ideas. Hasn't gotten really hot here yet but I'm sure it'll happen sometime this summer. My chicks LOVE watermelon so I'll be sure to give them some of that when it gets hot. I like the frozen bottle ideas too. I can see that working really well.

For the folks who have access to using a fan, you could freeze blocks/buckets of water (making big ice blocks) and let the fan blow over the bucket. This will provide a nice, cooling breeze while the ice lasts. I HATE the heat myself so I do try to find ways to stay cool myself!

It was 103 degrees today and I live just North of Austin, TX. I watched the news a little but ago and they showed that it would be at least 100 degrees on each day of the week next week.

Can't wait for that. NOT.

I will try the 2 Liter Bottle and Fan method to see if they can stay cool since they were just put in the coop.

Having same problem here in Iola texas, babies dying daily, was just trying to see if anyone could give suggestions that have been at this a while, I have only been doing it for about a year and a half but am really not liking losing my babies to this heat, we live on a limited income so wondering how exspensive the misting systems are? thanks so very much Rhonda
