How many of you have a chicken that lives in the house? I have a 3 month old Gold Lace Wyndotte that we brought in about 2 weeks ago because she was 1/2 dead from the others not letting her eat or drink. I tried to put her back out on the 4th but they came after her as soon as she was down. She came running back to me, so she's back in the house and getting VERY spoiled.
She has her own canvas playpen with a screen top for her cage but she gets the run of the house when we're home. I have a diaper coming that I ordered. She follows me around like a dog and has to be either on my shoulder or at least on the chair next to me if I'm sitting down.

I don't know what's going to happen with her. If she'll ever be able to go back out. We're going to try "mixing" her in with the others once they are old enough to be in with our older chickens and they're all out in the yard. That's not for another 3 months....LOL

Just thought I would share. My kids think I'm nuts.

Well, I have a mama bantam hen and her five week old chick in the house. She raised the chick outdoors just fine for two weeks, and then unfortunately the other broody bantam hen came off of the nest, into the run, and pecked the chick severely. It definitely isn't my preference, but it'll do for now. My bedroom floor is covered in sheets and towels (that can be washed on hot and bleached). There is a dog crate in the corner which contains the nesting box. Every morning at sunrise, she brings the wee little fluff out and struts about the room. -hilarious! I take them outdoors numerous times per day (supervised) so they can spend time with the rest of the flock. I've been gradually working towards integrating the bantams again. -hoping that a few more weeks of this is all that is necessary. They are adorable, but it just doesn't seem fitting to have chickens perching around the house. -kids and hubby think it's a hoot! The yorkie isn't too thrilled that birds have invaded his space.

I do.

However, I recently came to the realization I really am a crazy chicken lady, so my support may not change your kids' impressions.

Had to bring in a White Crested Black Polish rooster named Jack whose crest was picked on by the flock three separate times involving several days recuperating in the house. Finally, I just made him a diaper-clad house rooster. He has since passed.

But while he was alive, I saw a notice for a white silkie hen which needed a good home because she had been picked on so much. Explaining about Jack was surely the reason I got to bring Sparkle into my life and house. Sparkle has gone broody and hatched chicks TWICE, all in the house. Yeah, I gave her the eggs.

From my flock of fifty-plus hens, four of them sneak into the house to lay their eggs in special places; Sparkle's nest (2 of the 4), the dog bed under the TV table, and in the clean linen bin. Those are the 3 or 4 eggs a day I don't have to go out to the coop to gather....and they're always clean!

We love our house chick! Glad to know others also have indoor chickens. Ours is indoors becos we only have the one. Hopefully later we can add to that, but this was an unplanned gift to my 2yo daughter from an uncle taking her to the fair. We werent prepared at all! 3 weeks and Now we are in love! 2 days ago we got a large cage dog kennel and Chickadee loves it and is doing much better now that she/he can see everything going on around the house when shes not loose. Pretty sure its a she, next few weeks we will be a bit more certain.

I see nothing wrong with a house chicken. I've had some in the past, and they are just so sweet. Sometimes we just have to do what we've got to do, right?

lol That is awesome. I'd be sent to live in the chicken coop if I ever allowed a chicken in the house. I love my chicks though and it would be hilarious to have them inside

I have a house chicken too-- Maxine is house Diva :) She knows what she wants and has really taken to life in the house. She cuddles up on the couch with me at night. Enjoy spoiling your house chicky!
