I had seen a thread for this, but it was from way back in 2009. So I thought I would start a new one.
Do any of you like to keep chickens as house pets? Would you like to share your stories and
pictures?
House breaking: Many people have asked how I have house broken my rooster. I placed a puppy mat by my back door, and would watch for the potty dance. Anytime I had him on the mat and he pottied I would use a clicker and treat him. If any accidents were had I would move them to the mat, after about a week he got the idea. There are accidents sometimes, but very rarely. For his treat I used a very small dab of vanilla frosting. My little guy has a huge sweet tooth. He is a very smart bird.
I have a Chinese Nankin Bantam named Leo, he's just about 1 year old and weighs only 26 ounces. I got him from my boyfriend's dad when he was only 3 days old. He had tons of issues, and required a lot of medical attention. He for the most part thinks he is people. I have him house broken, he poops on a puppy mat that I keep by the back door. So he has free roam of the house all day, and sleeps in his cage only at night. I let him run and play outside for a few hours each day. I have 2 hens outside. who really hate my little Leo. So I have to keep them apart. They like to fight through the glass on the back door though. Leo is really affectionate and likes to cuddle with me, as well as watching me browse the internet. I think he is a better watch dog than my own dog, he tells me when people are around the house long before she does. He's also as bad as my dog however when it comes to my boyfriend and I eating dinner. He will beg or if you aren't giving in he will walk right up to your plate and help himself. I love my little guy.
His favorite spot in the winter, the blue towel is his favorite "blankie"
Getting some sun
Found some treats
Browsing the net or demanding cuddles on a chilly day
Bonus my hens Mavis is in the back and Mikey is in the front.
