OK, so I've always heard it's impossible for birds to hold poo. Soooo, this is what I believed for the last 15 years of owning a duck that can come inside. I found out otherwise yesterday at the vet. When she said "so you plan on diapers right, I don't recommend the house training, it can make them hold it too long, causing problems down the line." I was like "WHA!!!? you can house train a duck?!" After I picked my jaw up off of the floor, I repeated the sphincter control info I had heard everywhere and from everyone but she said it can be done, some even train them to go on command or in certain areas. But she recommends against it for the ducks health. Has ANYONE else heard of this, or even more so, tried it?

I'd say it's along the line of "elimination communication" with newborn babies. The babies aren't potty trained, their caregivers are trained to watch for signals that they have to go. If you don't get them to a toilet ASAP you'll have a mess.

hmmm. She did say that they tend to hold it for too long though. There's another Exotic pet vet near me, I'n gonna call him and see what he has to say on the subject. Not that I want to do it, but I 'm just curious to see if it cold be done.

I read that broody ducks will hold it overnight untill they are let out. So mabye the mechanics are their
