Ok, so this is my first time raising this many chicks. Add to that, I had a head injury the week before they arrived and have been trying my best to stay on top of things so they will thrive while my head heals. I must have had a plan for them, but since the injury, don't recall exactly how that was going to play out as they grew.

So far, so good, they are now out of the house and into a larger brooder box attached to an X-large dog crate with heat lamps over part of it in case they do get cold (we've had colder temps these last few days, but they don't hover around that area too much). they are out growing this already and I may build a "run" attached to the brooder box (3x7) right in my garage. Since I'm not thinking as clear as normal, need some help making some decisions. They are wyandottes and some are growing fast and large!

My quesion:

Before I build again, only to probably dismantle later...
Can they go into my main coop (10x12 with 14x18 run attached) with the 8 hens (separated of course) or is there any health concerns still at this age that they shouldn't be living that close yet?
If not, what age is ok to add them in (separated)?
Need ideas of what people do when they raise so many babies as they go through each stage??

I am almost to the point of just getting another outside shed to house these little ones, but money is tight since I was out of work for several weeks.

Hope this all makes sense!

I'm new to raising chickens, but if you just got them, you should keep away from your others ones at least a month in case there's something wrong with them health wise.

Good Luck.

Thanks BillT, welcome to the world of raising chickens! I've had these guys since they were day olds. This is only my second season with chickens and since last year everthing was new, it was easier (the coop was new, the chickens were gotten as day olds, etc). Plus last year I only had 6 day olds compared to this year of 26! For some that is still a low number, but for me it seems like tons! But they are super cute and fun, I just need to get their housing needs met while they grow.

If you have a way to put them out in the same area, but divided with a fence for a bit, and with a heat source available just in case, maybe that would work. There is a thread here about how to introduce your new chickens to an existing flock, if you search for it.

Is there any reason NOT to put them in near the older girls? (I understand they would need to be separated to not get picked on)
