All of my pens are soft roofed so I always forget about that part. Yes. Make sure they can't flush into a hard surface. They can and will break their silly, fragile, necks.

Or have the roof low enough they can't get much force. I've found 10 inches is far safer than 12 for my birds

The quails have been outside since this post... but today I have had to bring one of my female inside!! She has gunky eyes to the point one of them was closed shut!?! I have cleaner with water and they are open and clear... what is wrong with her???xxx

Do you have a pic of the eye?

There are several possibilities, 1. some infection due to something mechanical or biological 2. pecking from the others 3. vitamine deficit. Probably more ... .

But even with a pic it is hard to tell, without ... pure guessing into the blue.

this is her worst eye.. the other isn’t too bad. She just coughed when I took this photo.. she keeps shaking her head also and from what I can describe looks like she is “gasping” (I just bathed her )

I would stopp treating it and watch carefully, how it will develope.

Can you take her to a vet? If not, you could try Justanswer.com to speak with an avian vet. Coughing, gasping, and shaking her head sound like illness, so I don't think it's just an eye issue. I've been told shaking the head can be a sign of respiratory infection, or of trying to get something out of the respiratory tract (for example, if she breathed in some water while you were washing her).
