Hova-bator Vents???

So I started my first hatch in my new hova-bator and have a quick question! Do I need to have the vents open? Every time I remove one, the temps fluctuate too much and when I put it back in it stabilizes.

I leave the air vents open during first 18 days and close up the last 3 days (lockdown) to help humidity stay at the needed higher humidity! Hope that helps and have a great day. Nancy
