I was given a used hovabator with an egg turner, and NO instructions. I think I assembled the egg turner correctly (?) but I don't know where to put the thermometer or what to put water in. I'd like to get eggs Jan there quick -- can somebody help?

You can put the thermometer where ever you want I set mine on top of my eggs. Doesn't your incubator have tracks in the bottom for water?

Okay, I didn't know what the thermometer could touch. And yes, there are some rectangles in the bottom of the incubator, but never having seen an incubator of ANY kind... I didn't know exactly what to do. These poor eggs don't know what they're in for with me, lol!

Plug it in and play with it to get a feel before you get eggs. Using a hygrometer see what you get for humidity filling one bottom tray with water then the other and both. Also you will dial in the temperature.

If it's a still air, no fan, you measure temp at top of egg and run 101.5F. If it's forced air (fan) temp is kept at 99.5F.

I've been collecting eggs for a while -- do I need to wipe them off or anything before setting? A few have some smudges, but I've been too nervous to mess with them.

I found with my incubator I don't need to add water if I have a full load of eggs. The evaporation from the eggs gives me plenty of moisture
