How beneficial is having a rooster?

Some breeds do well solo, others do better with a small flock. It would be nice if you could get a small flock hens for him, even if they are older. Lots of people have older flocks of 2-6 hens they need to find a home for free. Just make sure the birds are healthy and you will have one happy rooster and a pretty flock foraging the property.

Yea he's always wanted a rooster running around his property. He's a single guy that lives on acreage. Can roosters live solo or does he need a couple hens?
He could have a couple hens, or a couple of roosters. Bachelor roosters get along with each other fine if there are no hens involved. Jungle chickens have been observed to be more commonly in flocks of two(or single when raising chicks) and typically no larger than four, so I think that he does not need a lot of friends to be happy, but they are social, so I would get him at least one friend.
If roosters have no competition with other roosters over females, they can be fine with only one or two hens because they do not feel challenged, so they mate less.
