HOW BEST TO PACKAGE EGGS FOR SHIPPING DO"S AND DON"TS

i received 2 lots of eggs today.

the first was 10 marans (9+1). They were packed in bubble wrap, on their sides and a 3/4 inch thick peice of foam rubber above below and in between 2 layers of eggs.

The second set was buff bramhas 18+2 eggs. double boxed and individually bubble rapped. 14 were big end up with 4 sitting on their sides on top. One was busted.

Both sets were shipped Monday and arrived wednesday

I was walking round the outdoor section of a local shop and saw the plastic cotainers for carrying eggs when you are camping - similar to the photo below. They come in 6's and 12's. I just wondered if they would assist in the transportation via post and help stop the crushing damage of the posties boot!? Just a thought.

personally any kind of egg carton like this is exactly what i avoid at all cost. The eggs should have no solid material near them, if the box suffers an impact these would either break the shells or at the very least exagerate the impact which would do interior damage to the egg. Thanks for your idea, it at least gave an opportunity to express what not to use. Being of rigid plastic it would likely suffocate the eggs not providing enough ventilation. thanks for contributing

i am betting you will get pretty good results from those eggs .

i candled them. Some of the BB air cells are all over the place. Others are small and tight. It was 22 eggs shipped - I put 2 in with the marans and forgot til i opened
The marans had 2 saddled and the rest look great using the double LED technique.

I feel pretty good.

When I came across those thinks I thought they were cute. I am sure they would be good for me to carry non fertile eggs camping because i am a thundering big oaf.

I actually think you may be on to something...practicality aside (as using something like that might be cost prohibitive), if you were to put enough padding in each little compartment, it would not be unlike a hard case for a violin or a guitar (or something to that effect), which is about the best way to protect an instrument during travel. If the compartments are only large enough for an egg to fit in without any padding around it, that definitely would be a no-go, but with a little extra space it could work. Would definitely protect the eggs from being crushed.

my theory is that there are three types of damage caused to eggs when they travel

1. Gross damage caused by rough handling - broken or scrambled eggs
2. Effects of air pressure changes in their plane ride via the Fedex Memphis hub
3. Vibration damage cause by, well, vibration.

Based on experiments we conducted, shaking an egg to disrupt its air cell is tough to do but if you follow the principles of boyles law of gasses, the change in pressure is a definite possibility.
Although this is just an opinion, its the vibration of the trip that messes most eggs up. That's why intact on arrival eggs shipped in cartons seem to fair worse than those in bubble wrap or foam.

Those containers may exacerbate the vibration issues.

i agree that such pkging might protect from shell breakage but it doesn't do much to protect the egg from interior damage, which I think contributes mostly to incomplete development and hatch. see the other post above which talks about vibration damage. i still contend that individually wrapped in bubblewrap is the best way. The above is supported by the evidence that i consistantly have my best hatch rates from eggs packaged that way.
