How big of a nest box?

What are the dimensions for a nest box for standard chickens?

I've made my boxes 12" wide x 14" deep x 14" tall and they work quite well for my biggest Wyandottes

Mine are about the same as above and they work good for my Barred Rocks RIR and White Rocks

Does it really matter how tall the nest box is? I've got a couple of old recycling buckets, and was planning on stacking them on top of each other, except its almost a metre tall

D'you reckon that will be okay??

Average is 12 x 12 but I made mine just shy of 15 x 15 - hope it works for the girls. Looks cozy to me.

I meant the inside will be almost a metre tall.
And how can the nest be that high, and still be lower than the roost??
