We're at this stage and trying to figure out how big/what to use to make perches for our 4 chickens?

is a flat board with the edges rounded or a round dowel board best? What size?

Thanks.

After much reading on BYC I've learned a 2x4 with the 4" side up is the most used choice. Especially in colder states so the birds can settle down on it and cover their feet with their feathers for warmth. Many use 2x2's also. Round dowels, even large ones, aren't as easy for the birds to sleep on. We just changed our wood closet rod dowels that I had in the coop out for 2x4s and my chickens seem much happier now. Natural branches would work well too if they are pretty thick in diameter.

My personal veiw on this is use 2x2 or anything larger I use 2x2 without any problems. Don't go for anything round as they will use them once and never again! When i first started i used a old broom handle and when i put them up there the just rolled over and hang upside down to afraid to let go i then took them down and they were fine. I week later they were stripped out and in goes the 2x2!!!!
