How big should chicken saddles be?

I see patterns saying that they should be 8" long(the measurement from neck to tail), but that seems kinda long to me. Is the saddle supposed to go over their tail a bit?

I would say so, makes it harder for the roo to pull feathers.

I actually don't have a rooster, I just got my girls and their previous home had a rooster. One of them has a pretty bare back, and tonight's gonna be below freezing, so I was making one for her to stay warm and protect her while she heals. I made it 7 inches long(although I think it ended up more like 6.25), and that was perfect for her, although I think she's a kinda small BO. Thank you!
