My birds are almost 5 weeks. I already have butchering scheduled for 8 weeks but I'm not sure if they are gaining enough weight. With only 3 weeks left, will they be the right size? I free feed them 22% starter now they are going on finisher 19%. Also I'll be moving them outside to a coop/run as it finally warmed up enough. Advice?

My guess would be at 5 weeks they are likely the same size as a Cornish hen at the grocery store which is exactly what they are Roughly 3lbs. Your doing fine they will really start putting the pounds on now until 8 weeks.

Where did you buy them from? Just asking because I am about to order some meaties.

I got mine from Hoovers in Iowa. Went a little overboard for a first go. If I average 5lbs, I'm looking at nearly 300lb of chicken meat! I've been trying to sell it but haven't had much luck.

At the end I'm guessing I'll have about $900 into them. Butchering I'm looking around $500, $250 in food and $150 for the chicks. If I can sell at least that much I'll be happy.

I butcher myself so that surely helps.
I end up $2.50-$3.00 per pound dressed cost wise.
