How big should I make the door to the yard for the chickens?

We started to build our coop this week and things are going well. I plan on adding pictures tomorrow of the progress. I do have a question about how big I need to make the chicken door out to the yard. Could anyone help me out with this? We are going to have standard layers.

I think mine is 12 inches wide and 15 inches tall. I got that dimension from the BYC forum.

I forgot... depending on what litter method you are using dont put the door right on the floor. I have mine 6 inches off the ground because I use deep litter method

I am using the deep litter method and I never gave it a thought about the door being high enough to contain the litter. Thank you very much for that reminder. I’m getting ready to go get started on the coop and that is one of the things I hope to get done today.
