How big should the chicken door be?

We, well my wonderful husband that is.. finished building the metal shed that we will be using as a coop.

Now we have to cut some windows, venting and a chicken door into it.

Our girls are Standards(Buff Orps and a Black Cochin.)

After we get this done we are building their run, roosts and nesting boxes.

Also. Can you paint a metal shed? While my daughter really likes the "Hershey" brown color of the trim I really want to do something "cute" around the windows and such
