How big should the chickens door be?

mine is wide like a reg fence made of wood...we used scrap lumber after the hurricane...and we used a fence door intact...reason being is....when we bring a new baby in, we keep them in a large dog kennel...if theres bad weather I can just put the dog kennel also into the coop with my other chickens.....

all out of used trashed hurricane aftermath we had last year.

We went 9x12 or so thinking smaller is better for winter. I have a big Marans hen and she fits through fine. I just wish I'd put TWO pop doors in at opposite ends to reduce cornering possibilities when integrating chicks. No biggie at peaceful times but I had no idea what stressful change would look like back then. And yes, the door should be above shavings level. Mine is about 6" up but you'd go higher for deep litter.

I have a 9"w by 10"h and all chickens go threw with ease. I have 3 roosters and 1 seems very large for a roo he is at least compared to his father and brother, at least 2ft tall with huge legs that look like a turkeys and he fits just fine with that size of door, they seem to be able to squat down and walk threw easily.
