How big should the opening of the nesting box be?

I think our opening is about 7" but all together it's about 10" deep. There is a board across the front so the straw and eggs don't fall out. Is this big enough for the hens to go in?
 
Mine are 12X12X12 in one of my coops and a little smaller in the other one. I think that both work fine for my gals. (They are reg size not banty)
 
Our nesting boxes are 12x12x14 The opening is actually 12x12 but once they get in it's taller in the back because we have the slanted roof so they can't roost on top of it.
 
Well I had made a mistake originally. The box is 12x12x12 but like I said we have a 2x4 in front so things won't fall out which makes the opening 8" not 12. Thanks for all you measurements!
