I know it's happened before cause I've seen posts about it. Today one of my large dogs broke his chain and killed our only grown duck, the rest are babies. He was a couple of years old and the only buddy for our emden goose. I am so angry with my dog!!!!!!

My friend Jessi-- aka Bluegrass Bantams got a dog in Dec. from the pound. He's reallly pretty! A shepherd/heeler cross. He's gotten a fair share, but we are trying to train him not to. He's not interested when people are home, but got some chooks and a guinea when left home alone. Guess he got bored!

u must be the Kelly she always talks about? Jessi and I have been talking a lot the last few days about me getting some seramas. I'm getting the roo "BUFF"

My dog respects me if I'm there, and she's rarely outside if I'm gone.
She respect the electric fence even more. (or any single strand of wire, hot or not)

She would take out a chick if she had the chance, I just don't give her a chance. She doesn't mess with them in their pen though, she's lazy.

I know how you feel! Its happend to me also! My innocent little Daisy Mae jumped the deck and almost killed my birds also...thankfully we were home to stop her!(she tore a few up pretty good though!)... but i didnt blame her..not really..its not her fault..shes just a dog. Sorry about your duckie!

heehe, thats cool! Its hard because your first instinct is to be so angry at the dog...and i really had to stop myself from punishing her "after" the fact..because i knew she would have NO clue why she was in trouble..and thats just not fair to her. But we have been working on it lately..and at least now if i am in the yard she wont even look at them...but that wont help if she jumps the gate again...

My dog was the reason for losing at least 6 chickens before I figured out what was going on. I lost 2 ducks in that time as well, but I'm not sure if it was her or not. I only ever found a few feathers, not the whole bird as I did with the chickens.

Some breeds of dogs will do that and some others don't. I guess it just depends on the dog

I just had to dog proof our run - our little couchrats decided that they are really mean hunting BEASTS

I would never trust any dog around chickens - they are natural predators.

When my Dog started digging at the run yesterday I decided to extend the wire about 2 ft around the run on the floor - pinned it down with landcaping pins and I will get some rocks on there too - when he now tries to dig by the fence he reaches wire and that seem to discourage him.

I would not let my dogs be in the yard alone with the chickens though - I bet they would find a way in if they were just bored enough.

I am thinking about an electric fence
