How broody are Orpingtons?

Orpingtons from hatcheries are generally less broody.

Cackle has a nice selection of colors. Silver laced, jubilee, lavender, and buff. Most other hatcheries I’ve seen tend to only have buff and occasionally lavender.

I’m not a fan of either of those colors in orps, so if you find another hatchery with a larger selection let me know.

Which hatchery are you going through? My one Orp hen was a Lavender from Meyer and she was one of my favorite birds. The biggest bird in my main flock, yet the most gentle soul. She loved sitting in laps, but when more than one lap was available, she would sit between instead of on someone so that everyone could pet her. She passed on this year and I miss her a lot. I ended up getting two Blue Orpington pullets from Meyer in July (so they're not old enough to judge on broodiness yet) and they're not quite as friendly as she was, but definitely sweet birds as well. Not sure you could go wrong with any of them (but I'm also not a fan of Buff as a color on chickens so wouldn't get that variety, myself, oops ).

Your lavender sounds like such a sweetheart! I’m sorry you lost her…I have heard such good things about their personalities but no one I know has an Orpington because they are afraid of broodiness.

Going through Mt. Healthy or Murray McMurray. Splitting order w our family farm so whichever they decide is where I pick from! Lol

Mt Healthy has buff, lavender, black, chocolate & red. I need to tell my aunt & uncle about Cackle! A jubilee would be amazing!

Two of my Cochin girls literally were in the broody buster for 3 months over the summer, with about a week's break somewhere in the middle because I guess they just wanted to make me think they were done or something. Crazy girls!

Looks like both of those hatcheries have a good variety of Orpingtons. I've heard good things about Cackle's stock as well. Good luck deciding!

Haha, yeah, I love my Cochin bantams a lot, they are in my top 3 favorite breeds, but if you don't want or can't handle broodies where you are, they are probably not the right breed for you. They have just the right amount of sweetness and sassiness that makes them so adorable and endearing, especially when they're in a mixed flock where you can see them go from the sweetest little birdies in your lap to the sassiest little squirts walking through the bigger birds like they own the place. I do hope you can have some some day!

Mine tend to go broody once or twice a year.

I have two Orpingtons. One is a Lavender that has never gone broody, and another is a Buff that goes broody once or twice a year. The Buff is really easy to break if I want, but I did let her hatch out chicks this year, and she was great.
