I am trying to get some suprelorin for one of my chickens. She has been eggbound in the past and is getting ready to start laying again. I don't want to risk her getting eggbound again but my vet will only administer it to chickens with a life and death situation. I know you can buy this OTC in other countries. Does anyone have any ideas?

Consider not giving her implants until you find out there really is a problem. You're worrying over something that may never happen again. It's possible she could become eggbound over and over again.

Either way, if you are in the US, you will need a Vet to provide the implants.

Suprelorin is a prescription only medication in the US (and most other countries). Labeled use is for dogs and ferrets, but it’s used off-label for birds. However, a couple years ago FARAD banned the use of this implant in food animals. This unfortunately includes pet chickens as well as production chickens (and pheasants, quail, turkey, duck, etc). government doesn’t care if neither the bird nor her eggs would ever be consumed by humans. Same is true for Baytril. These drugs can be used in parrots, for example, but a veterinarian in the US would risk losing their license if they were to put a Suprelorin implant in a chicken. The drug they can use in poultry is a leuprolide acetate injection. This is very inconvenient for us chicken lovers. The two doses the implant comes in - 4.7mg and 9.5mg - last ~180 days and ~360 days respectively in chickens (quail had more varied results). That amounts to one implant a year In the best case scenario. In contrast, the leuprolide acetate injection only lasts ~4wks (with lots of variation depending on the bird) before you’d need to return to the vet for another injection. Leuprolide acetate is also more expensive, at least in my neck of the woods. I’m sure there are vets out there that provide the implant to chickens because they work primarily with parrots and aren’t paying attention to FARAD (food animal regulations), just as I know there are vets that give Baytril to chickens. Which is fine by me, but this means you may have difficulty finding an avian vet who will risk putting the implant in a chicken. Otherwise, Canada. Chickens coming in from Mexico have to be quarantined for 30 days with very few exceptions, so that’s a no in my book. Chickens coming in from Canada need paperwork usually but no quarantine.
For me, the leuprolide acetate is so expensive that it would be cheaper for me to fly to Canada to get the implant. But this avian influenza outbreak will make travel with poultry even more absurdly difficult.

Please let me know if you find out how to get it prescribed. I just called the local vet well not really local four hours away and it is $700 for the implant and 90 for the exam.
I recently lost three chickens one was egg bound. One had a prolapsed vent and another one had lash eggs. She stopped playing about four years ago. I do not eat eggs I am a vegan I don’t want nothing to do with the eggs and the eggs cause nothing but death and suffering for these chickens. And plants are amazing but the price of them is just on ridiculous.
These poor hens suffer all oveR stupid eggs. Please let me know if you found a cheaper way to get a hold of the implants.

Hey...did you ever find the Suprelorin anywhere? It's B.S you can't get it here in the U.S for anything other than ferrets. Another way for the medical industry and big pharma to make a dime.
