how can i keep my birds out of the mulch

New to BYC. Free ranging in the yard during the day. Going well but my 3 hens love to dig in the landscape mulch around the perimeter for bugs, and are making a big mess. Is there some thing i can put on the landscape mulch to keep my birds away from certain areas - like a non toxic spray?

. Besides putting up a barrier I think anything else is going to be useless against your chickens.

Not much will work. Under the mulch is where the tasty bugs are and the birds hone in on that. You need to put up a barrier or contain the birds. Sorry.

I wanted to confine my chickens to a run for their own safety. The boyfriend wanted them in a run for the sake of the mulch. Unfortunately, they love the stuff and will continue to scratch it up unless you put up a solid barrier.
