How can I tell if my chicken is a rooster or not

If under ten weeks old, it is definitely a cockerel.

Barred Rock, and yes, it is a cockerel. You can sex this breed by the barring. Males get two copies of the barring gene, and therefore have wider white bars and more narrow black bars. This gives them a 'lighter' appearance.

The green sheen to black feathers can occur in both genders. It is not male specific.

Yeah mostly on black birds. But in general the roosters tail should start curling and turning beautiful!
