How can I tell if my hen is broody?

My 5 month old Orpington has been is her nesting box all day. I only worry because it is very hot, 98 degrees, and she is panting.

Update--worrying for nothing, she got up

I assume she is an active layer.... or is she attempting her first egg delivery?
