how can to tell the age of a chicken

My advise to you would be to separate the flock and keep careful track of how many eggs each hen lays in a 5-7 day period. The more they lay the younger they are, also younger hens generally lay smaller eggs. You may find this to be too much effort but if you are in this for the eggs you will save on the wasted feed if you can quickly cull out the old girls.

We color band ours to tell because by look you really cant tell. With hens egg production goes down but even that some hens lay great for half a dozen years and if you have more than one hen you dont know how many each is laying anyway.
