How can you sterilize the coop & pen after disease?

It is used in the manufacturing of concrete, its almost like a wood ash buts not. Maybe a potassium of sorts.
I cant remember the chemical name but I believe its acidic/corrosive. Over time it would even corrode galvinized pipe

crj is correct. There are lawsuits going on in Florida where fly ash was dumped years ago in several sites around a city and playgrounds. Houses were built on top of these sites causing health issues to homeowners and young children playing at the playgrounds....the playgrounds have since been closed by the EPA. I'm unsure of the status of the homeowners lawsuits....it's been many years ago. Boring Farm I suggest you try oxine....google oxine and read up on it, you might be interested in using it, it's more powerful than bleach and several BYC's have used it.

Bleach rapidly loses it's ability to disinfect when it comes in contact with organic matter. Oxine is a good disinfectant; in your case I would recommend activating it, just use a mask for yourself and don't have birds or other animals around. Novalsan and tec-trol are good; virkon-s is supposed to be the best. Agricultural lime over the ground afterwards is a good idea--it is supposed to help disinfect.

Virkon is what most commercial facilities use now. It is good against virus as well and bacteria. The State Ag guys used it when they came and depopulated my flock due to ILT. The sprayed everything ground, grass and the facilities.

I had a similar situation as you a couple of years ago. I bought chickens off of craigslist and they had that respiratory disease that infected the rest of my flock, too.

BTW, we just used a .22 to cull our flock. A very unhappy situation.

Anyway, I disinfected the coop with a sprayer, broom & brush. The solution was approximately 5 gallons of water, a couple of cups of bleach and a couple of cups of vinegar. I read somewhere that the combination of bleach AND vinegar is a strong disinfectant. Spray down and scrub the walls, roosts nest boxes and everything else in there.

A few months later when I got new chicks from McMurray Hatchery, I was a little nervous, but it worked! My chickens didn't get sick!

Good luck.

I just happened to run across this old post — yikes! Can you clean with vinegar and bleach? You should never clean with these two ingredients combined. Mixing chlorine bleach, which contains sodium hypochlorite, with any type of acid like vinegar creates chlorine gas, a dangerous chemical that's deadly in high volumes.
