I have 2 New Hampshire Reds that are currently in a smallish tractor. For the summer I am going to build an extended run, but want an insulated coop for the winter. I have a great spot next to the house, but I am concerned with Flies and smell. I live in a subdivision, and while all the neighbors are cool with the chicks, it needs to blend well

What do you think?

My coop is about 150' from my house. That was about my only option for space. I am in a neighborhood with those dreaded covenance so I am glad it is back near the woods - nothing to see, nothing to complain about (I hope).

Here I go again. Sorry

You DO NOT want any neighbor problems from odor! If you use DE, and more importantly, if you habitually keep it clean, it won't smell any worse than a dog run.

I spent 12 years

, again, looking for a place for my horses because I keep reading stories of horse owners who moved in to AG zoned properties close to housing developments, and the property owners fought to change the horse-owner's zoning. Couldn't keep their animals, and they had to move.

...gosh, I'm sounding O L D and "L E C T U R E L Y"!!!!!!!

Our temp. coop is about 13 feet from my moms living room windows, we have not had any problems with any smell or bugs. The new coop is going to be about 100 feet from the house. With the temp. coop being so close to the house, we havn't really had problems with predators, but with the new coop being so far, we are making it a fort knox coop.

As long as you keep the coop clean, or use a DLM that works for you, there shouldnt be any problems with smell. But keep in mind that coops attract rodents. We got lucky, our chickens will kill any rodent that dares come into their pen.

Not sure if anything I said will help, but I tried.

Mine is 20 feet from my house and there are no smell issues. Baby chicks in the brooder in the garage smelled far worse then the mature pullets outside in the coop.

I am sensitive to smells and I have to stick my head inside the coop to notice any bad smell. However, I take care of the droppings under the roosts daily and I rake the run every 5 to 7 days.

My coop is about 60-80 ft away, only because it's an existing building and that's, you know, where it existed

But I will tell you that when I've had 3 hens in a tractor in the yard, sometimes less than 10' from the bedroom window in the summer, there was absolutely zero odor, and possibly one or two extra flies but I am not even sure about that.

It would be different if you were talking about lots more chickens, mind.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
