How cold is cold?

If "in al" in your username means "in Alabama", I should not think you'd have to heat at all, certainly not right now. (Next year they will have larger combs). It is FINE for the water to freeze, that is NOT a problem at all, just replace it with fresh liquid water in the morning. Really. Chickens are only 60% water, they do not turn into icecubes at 32 F

Good luck, have fun,

Yes, I'm in Alabama, and your chickens have way more protection than mine do! Mine are in a chain-link kennel with a tarp around most of three sides and the top. They're just fine, even on the nights when their water froze completely solid.

I use a heat lamp for hatchery chicks until they have feathers all the way up on their heads. After that, especially in a closed coop like yours, they don't need heat in this climate.

(I would advise that you search for threads about ventilation. It's really important to have enough ventilation, but not drafts.)

below 0*F. Mine are going through a molt right now and we got down with the wind chill to -7*F and everyone was okay, I dont think I'd worry to much. Just make sure wind can't blow directly into the coop.
