How cold is TOO cold for a chicken?

Nope, freezing point (32 F) is 0 C. Easy to memorize

-9 C would be about 16 F.

For the record, -18 F is 0 F

-40 is the same in both systems

Just thought I'd chime in here and say that this morning it was -10 F outside (that' without windchill) and 10 above inside the coop...and there sat one of my girls out in the run, squating to lay an egg. I shooed her inside and she promptly hops up in one of the 3 open boxes like,"Oh yeah, I knew that!"

Silly girl

I love this thread! Good to hear from others who are living in the frozen tundra!

We're working on day 9 of -20 to -30F temps. That's the range... -20F as the high. It's staying at about 10F in the coop. Only problems have been the 3 month old babies... not quite used to getting their feet off the cold, cold floor yet. Most of them have come back into the garage until the cold snap is over (Wednesday?).

Your cold snap has lasted sooooooooooooooooo long too , Tori. I'm praying you get some respite, soon.

And here's a chart that converts Celsius and Fahrenheit easily:

We're having a break from extreme cold this week, and it's much needed. Coop was +3C today and hens are moving indoors and out with enthusiasm. Outside temp is -4C.

See!!! I told you I was horrible at converting celcius to Fahrenheit!!! Thanks for helping me picture things more accurately in my mind as to what you guys are going through as well!!! I think if we all just make it through this horrible weather, we can survive just about anything after this!!!!!

we have been lucky here it warmed up to 35 F at high noon and the coop temp was 40F!!!
there are three celcius settings I know 0c thats 32 or freezing -40 forget it and 20 c is a balmy 70 F when I have gone to nova scotia it is always 20 c degrees and beautiful...

That Celsius-Fahrenheit thing is not intuitive!

Our summers are wonderful, the tourist ads are accurate, too. This is an odd winter for us- like having three times the snow in 1/3 the time period. Plus we seldom get prolonged Arctic spells, not the best year to have a first flock, though it has made me cautious. So far, so good...storm #13 on Wednesday, #14 predicted for Saturday and the snowblower is in the shop for a weld. Might be ready tomorrow!

The only snowstorm I remember vividly was when I was about 5 years old, and we drove to Anchorage during a winter snowstorm. Well, one of our tires went over the side of a cliff, and my dad did everything possible to try to get it up onto the road. My mom and I were praying for dear life, and she all of a sudden had the thought to use the jack, so my dad did, and managed to put us back on the road. Just as that happened, a snow truck came by and told us to come "thaw" out at the D.O.T. road maintenance building. We had hot chocolate and orange juice. After a number of hours, the storm settled down enough, and by following the snow plow, for a long distance, we finally made it to Anchorage.

I can remember for years saying to anybody who mentioned Anchorage that it was an awful place!! Lol!! I didn't even want to go there ever again. It wasn't until I was an adult and travelled there many times and came to the realization that Anchorage is absolutely beautiful!! It took a long time to get those awful, fear filled images out of my mind.

to those of you who have to deal with the snowstorms!!! And

Yea, your storm #13 is supposed to be a wet, sleety, icy event for us on Tuesday night. How fun!

I prefer the snow to the ice, this morning I couldn't even get into my truck, it was encased in ice, youngest son had a heck of a time trying to get out of the driveway, it slopes slightly uphill and he spun the whole way up! I hadn't heard about the Friday/Saturday storm, time to check the Weather Underground! Ah, it looks like snow on Saturday for us, too. As long as the temps stay a bit moderate I don't mind.

The guy who fixes our snow blower went off the road yesterday morning. He was trying to get his son to the bus stop with his 4WD when 3 other teens from the school appeared ahead of them on the middle of the road. He honked, they wouldn't move and they ended up front first tipped over a steep ditch with major water. He was livid. Usually a nice guy, and I don't blame him. His son missed school and there was damage to the front end.

There used to be a professor who had a summer camp near ours in Pictou County, and he had lived in Anchorage for more than 25 years previously. Loved the place and regretted leaving. I think he went back. But those of you who cope with -50 have my respect, let me say.

Nothing intuitive about F-C conversions. It turned cold again but today the hens surprised me and have been in and out since 8 am. Yes a wet sticky one, snowblower will be ready tomorrow morning and a good thing we took it in for a weld, it also needed 2 new belts.

Batten down the hatches everyone, here we go again.

At least we installed snow boards after the second bad storm.
