How could I have saved this chick?

Same thing happens with the Ameracauna eggs--they will just never pip. I can hatch out Marans, but very few of those green eggs.
 
Some chicks just never hatch. But, if you are seeing a lot of eggs from one particular cross not hatching then you probably have something genetic happening. Personally, I would try another rooster on those hens. If most of the eggs are fertile, the hen part of the cross is working. If they are developing fully, but not hatching, that points to the rooster.

Personally, I never help chicks hatch, it is not a problem that I want to pass on to the next generation. I certainly wouldn't want to buy chicks that someone else had helped get out of the shell.
