I've casually researched chickens for quite a while. We have 16 acres, lots of horses and love fresh eggs. And I love to research just about anything! When my friend who works at the local Farmers Co-op saw 3 springs chicks that did not fare well in shipping he couldn't let them die (in spite of being terribly afraid of any bird). He brought them to another friend to wants to rescue all things. She did her best but lost 2. She wanted the remaining one to have a friend and kept them in her apartment till them were flying about it. So Dolly and Jolene relocated to my farm. They're almost 6 months old and should start laying any time. Another friend works for Tractor Supply and although she doesn't want to touch any, she LOVES watching chicken antics. I travel a lot in the summer showing horses and every time I was out of town she showed up with more chicks. All these friends board horses with me so I guess we're three crazy chicken ladies. I have 1 New Hampshire Red, 1 Plymouth Barred Rock, 4 Andalusians, 4 Cinnamon Queens. I have 13 Silkies and Bantam Cochins. I think I'll share a few Silkies with a friend who lost her whole Silkie flock to a racoon in one night. Two of the Silkies have the frizzled gene. The big problem is we are having trouble deciding which ones to share with my friend. So I've got chickens galore without ever having bought a single one! We're on a shared adventure. I have a wooden playset that the grandkids have outgrown and I'm thinking I'll move it to the barn and convert it to a large coop. My first thought was to convert one of my 12x12 horse stalls to a coop but the horse business is booming and I may need it for a boarder. I've visited this site for a long time and enjoyed all the info offered. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions as we go along.
