Hello all,
I have 23 7 1/2 week old chicks, 9 6 1/2 week old turkeys, 15 6 week old keets, 23 4 week old chicks and 49 1 week old meat birds. (Darn internet!)
I just started letting all of the 4 week and older chicks, turkeys and keets run around the inside of the barn full time. I let them outside for a bit when I'm at the farm and can keep an eye on them.
They are hilarious and I have found that I'm thinking about them all the time. I want to spend more time out there with them but I have no cell service there and I am self employed and need to stay in touch with my customers.
We went out to the farm this evening to put the horses in and feed all of the animals (5 horses, 2 lambs, 4 goats, 1 kitten and all of the birds.) and when I opened the door to the barn all the chicks came running toward me. I felt so loved... LOL
Now I feel bad because 5 of my 4 week olds are Cornish Rock X's and I "KNEW" they were meat birds but what I didn't know is that if I decided not to eat them they would die anyway. Now I'm attached to these sweet little birds (the Cornish Rocks) and they follow me everywhere I go hoping to be fed. They will end up in our freezer because that is what they were bought for.
Anyway, I guess what I'm getting to is that I never expected to fall in love with my chickens! LOL
Take care,
Tami
